For it's time I'd say Scanners. I loved that movie when I was a kid.

The Thing (1982)
Human, one of you. I always have been a dreamer, and I always will be, even if I know that sometimes this thing we call life is going to get down on my knees...

Now you know why films have a rating. Of course "The Exorcist" would scare a kid shitless Heck it scared adults. I was 18 when this came out and you wouldn't believe how much controversy it created and still does.. I recently saw a doco non GFOXTEL here in Australia on BIO and it had Linda Blair on it and she is an amazing actress even though her only great moment was as Regan. She starred in one of the "Airport" films and had roles in B Grade movies and Drive In Cult Films, I love the 70s films and am having trouble trying to get Food of the Gods and Alligator but then I have quite a few thousand DVDs in my library. I am a DVD addict and probably will never have all the movies I'd like.

I'm going to have to agree with Edwin123 and say The Exorcist! That is one heck of a scary movie and I believe it still holds true to this day as one of the scariest movies of all time. Of course The Shining runs a close 2nd!

One I found interesting was a little known movie from 1981 called "Ghost Story".   Interesting because it starred Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and John Houseman.  None who were ever known for the "Horror Movie" genre. Not a blood and gore movie but still quite disturbing when I watched it as a youngster. A little nudity and some scary moments.  Needless to say it is one I have in my library.  It's worth the watch just because of who is in it.
